Crista Gallo ’13 and Brendan Graziano ’11 on their experiences in the Emerging Scholars Program, and how it has shaped their path post-graduation.

The Gordon F. Derner Institute of Advanced Psychological Studies’ Emerging Scholars Program gives select undergraduates the opportunity to engage in original research with faculty mentors. Through the yearlong program, students gain the skills and experience to excel in graduate education and beyond.

“One of the greatest benefits of Emerging Scholars is the formation of a mentor-type relationship between a researcher in our department and a student,” said Professor Francine Conway, M.A. ’96, Ph.D. ’99, chair of the undergraduate psychology department and a founder of the Emerging Scholars Program. With guidance from their faculty mentors, students have the opportunity to present their work professionally at national conferences. Faculty mentors also guide students in terms of professional identity and career choice. “This experience really prepares our students to be competitive when applying to doctoral programs,” Dr. Conway said.
