Undergraduate Programs| A Note to Transfer Students

There can be great variation in the numbers and kinds of courses students have taken at other colleges or universities. Consequently, transfer students will need assistance in planning their program of study at Adelphi if they are to meet the requirements of the University and the undergraduate psychology division.

You should set up a meeting with a faculty member to review all the courses you have completed elsewhere and which were accepted as transfer credits at Adelphi. A list will be provided to you by the Admissions Office. It is critical that you bring this list to your meeting with a faculty member. Together, you and the faculty member will review your course work and determine what additional courses you will need to take in order to meet university and institute requirements as well as your own academic goals.

Note that the following changes in requirements for transfer students were approved by the Faculty Senate in the spring, 1998:

  • Students transferring with at least 30 credits but less than 60 are exempt from Freshman Seminar and Freshman Orientation. They need to meet English Composition, Second Competency and Distribution requirements* either with appropriate transfer credits or courses taken at Adelphi.
  • Students transferring with 60 or more credits must meet Composition and Distribution Requirements, either with appropriate transfer credits or courses taken at Adelphi. They are exempt from Freshman Seminar, Orientation, and 2nd Competency requirements.

*The Distribution requirement consists of a total of 24 credits - six credits in each of four different areas: The Arts, the Humanities, the Sciences, and the Social Sciences.

We highly recommend that all transfer students take the central courses in psychology (such as Cognitive Psychology, Social Psychology, Perception, and Behavior Modification) at Adelphi.

This is particularly important for transfer students who come to Adelphi after having taken many credits elsewhere, as the faculty at Adelphi will have had less of an opportunity to get to know them.
