Undergraduate Programs| Philosophy

The goal of psychology is to contribute to the understanding of consciousness and behavior and thereby to the betterment of the human condition.

The undergraduate division of the Derner Institute pursues this goal through teaching and research, empowered in its endeavors by an academy of faculty whose knowledge, skill, and expertise span all the disciplines of psychology. The undergraduate psychology program is a curriculum of study designed to impart to the student the following broad areas of knowledge:

Substantive Knowledge:

  • knowledge of general psychology,
  • knowledge of the primary disciplines within psychology,
  • knowledge of the major theories and significant research,
  • comprehension of and practice in research in psychology,
  • opportunity for fieldwork and clinical experience with adults and children.

Procedure Knowledge:

  • familiarity with research methodology, including the tools of statistics, the concepts of experimental design, and the process of conducting research;
  • basic understanding of applied aspects of psychology, including field work, clinical observation, and clinical practice;
  • an ability to think critically and communicate effectively about topics in psychology.

Knowledge of the Interrelationships of Knowledge:

  • psychology links with the social and natural sciences, on the one hand, and with the humanities and philosophy on the other;
  • the historical context of psychology, integrating its diverse facts and ideas from its roots in ancient philosophy to the findings of modern science;
  • the relevance of psychology to a single individual's life as well as to society-at-large.

Advanced Substantive Knowledge:

  • knowledge at an advanced level of selected areas within the field of psychology, as a springboard to graduate study or professional training.
