Marriage and Couple Therapy |
The Program in Marriage and Couple Therapy has a psychoanalytic and systemic orientation within a two-year course of study encompassing clinical theory, technique, and practice. The program provides clinicians with a theoretical foundation in psychoanalytic and systemic treatment as the basis for more advanced clinical work with couples. Several contemporary theories are addressed including object relations, intersubjective, structural, Bowenian, transgenerational, and strategic.
After the completion of two years of course work, supervision, and clinical practice candidates can expect to:
- Recognize the impact of multiple layers of influence that define and characterize marriage and couple relationships
- Understand the interface between psychoanalytic and systemic theories
- Recognize that dysfunction lies within relationships and that an individual’s symptoms are a manifestation of the influence of personal history and the nature of multiple systems within which they are embedded
- Have the skills to evaluate couple relationships and develop a treatment plan that is both comprehensive and flexible and takes into account individual and relationship developmental issues, life cycle concerns, and the couple’s strengths and limitations
