Postgraduate Programs Group Psychotherapy

The Postgraduate Program in Group Psychotherapy offers two tracks of group concentration. The one-year Program in Group Process consists of course work and experiential learning, and is designed for professionals interested in theories and techniques of group and group process, but who do not have access to their own clinical groups and/or who do not wish to supplement their learning with clinical supervision and personal group psychotherapy. The two-year Program in Group Psychotherapy involves additional didactic and experiential course work, clinical supervision, and personal group therapy. The second year focuses exclusively on intensive psychoanalytic group psychotherapy. Classes are held on Friday afternoon, from 3:30 PM to 6:45 PM, on the Adelphi Garden City campus.

Major schools of psychoanalytic group theory and technique are represented in both tracks, with an emphasis on the relational approach. Systems, cognitive, crisis-intervention, and behavioral modalities are included in course work and experiential learning. Our faculty members have written and contributed to many of the foremost texts in our field, and maintain active links with the major regional, national, and international organizations. Additionally, the Programs have many prominent colleagues in the group movement who visit regularly to lead candidate and graduate groups and participate in our conferences.

The Derner Postgraduate Group Programs emphasize the importance of the leader’s understanding of subjective experience in ongoing group work. Hence, we view course work, supervision, and personal group therapy as encouraging the candidate’s self-understanding and the development of his or her own point of view and expertise.
