Child, Adolescent, and Family Psychotherapy |
The Three-Year Program in Child, Adolescent, and Family Psychotherapy provides advanced training in psychodynamic psychotherapy with children, adolescents, and their parents. Candidates develop their ability to integrate neurodevelopmental, psychoanalytic, and family systems perspectives in their understanding of children and adolescents; to work effectively in child and adolescent psychotherapy and parent counseling; and to develop leadership skills in community agencies, hospitals, schools, and private practice. This program includes:
- Courses that meet one evening a week
- Individual supervision, which can be used to meet New York State licensure requirements
- Psychotherapy with children, adolescents, and parents at Adelphi University offices in Garden City or Manhattan, or in candidates’ offices
- Help in networking and developing a private practice
Curriculum
The curriculum is designed to help candidates develop a solid base of knowledge about normal development, family systems, and the contributions of classical and contemporary psychoanalytic theories to child and adolescent psychotherapy. This lays a foundation for learning about psychopathology, treatment issues, and the therapeutic process at different developmental stages.

Program Requirements
Requirements for the three-year program in child, adolescent, and family psychotherapy include:
- 120 hours of supervision (candidates work with three supervisors for a minimum of 40 hours each)
- 300 hours of personal psychotherapy (candidates’ psychotherapy prior to the program can be considered in meeting this requirement)
- Psychotherapy with one low-cost child or adolescent patient seen through the Psychotherapy Center for a minimum of 50 hours, and psychotherapy with six child and adolescent patients
- Case presentation in the second year or later
Admission Requirements
A doctoral or master’s degree in a mental health field, as well as licensure for private practice, is required. Applicants should complete an application and arrange to send transcripts from their graduate programs, plus two letters of recommendation. Two interviews with members of the Postgraduate Admissions Committee will be arranged. There is a non-refundable application fee of $50.
