Clinicians have traditionally emphasized the importance of early parent-child interaction, with minimal importance placed on the effect siblings can have on each other. Family therapy has customarily applies a wider lens that encompassed the complex interactions of all family members but rarely recognized the unique nature of siblings as a distinct and powerful subgroup.

This symposium will examine the impact of sibling relationships on couple relationships. Dr. Jody J. Leader will present her paper, "Ghosts of Early Sibling Relationships in Couples Therapy," followed by the screening of Sweetie, a film directed by Australian auteur Jane Campion, that is a patchwork quilt of moments, scenes, and melodramatic conflicts that depict the intense and intricate nature of siblling relationships. This film has won the AFI award and the Independent Spirit Award and was nominated for the Golden Palm Award at the Cannes Film Festival. A panel of distinguished clinicians with expertise in sibling dynamics and marital treatment will then discuss the implications of this perspective on the treatment of couples.

Conference Objectives:
At the end opf this conference participants will have a working knowledge of:

  1. The importance of sibling relationships in partner choice.
  2. Partner-partner sibling transference in psychodynamic couples therapy.
  3. How childhood sibling roles are re-enacted with adult romantic partners.
  4. The application of this theoretical perspective to clinical work with couples.
