“Adelphi gave me the ability to look at core business processes like employee selection and motivation in the workforce systematically.”

In June 2015, seven years after receiving his master’s degree in psychology with a concentration in industrial and organizational psychology from Adelphi University’s Gordon F. Derner Institute of Advanced Psychological Studies, Andrew Hosmer, M.A. ’08, was promoted to managing director, international for the medical technology company Bioventus. In his new role, he leads a team of nearly 100 people and is responsible for sales, marketing and reimbursement functions in the company’s markets in Europe, the Middle East and Africa. Hosmer credits the Derner faculty with helping him excel in his career.

“Adelphi gave me the ability to look at core business processes like employee selection and motivation in the workforce systematically,” Hosmer said. “The shared experiences from our professors gave me confidence tackling difficult real-world scenarios, such as restructuring.”

Hosmer chose Adelphi’s Adelphi’s master’s in psychology because it allowed him to work full-time at a demanding job and offered rich, in-person learning with professors who were also practitioners in the field.

“The faculty’s enthusiasm and real world examples hit home and provided me with the energy to stay engaged,” he said. “In courses like Employee Assessment …and Executive Coaching, I was walking away with tools for people management that I was putting to work in my training role at the time.  Many of these tools I still call on today.”

The sales and marketing team that Hosmer currently oversees at Bioventus is expected to deliver more than $29 million in profitable revenue this year for its products, which include ultrasound therapies for healing bone fractures and injections to manage knee and hip pain. Hosmer was promoted to his current role after teaming up with other leaders to build infrastructure and reorganize the company’s international business based in the Netherlands.

Asked what makes him successful in his career, Hosmer said, “I have always had a strong emotional intelligence and recognize the value of people in an organization. Using experiences from Adelphi and my career, I have learned how to create strong teams of people with varying talents who complement each other and lift the level of an organization’s performance.”
