About the Derner Institute| History

In 1972, the Gordon F. Derner Institute of Advanced Psychological Studies of Adelphi University became the nation's first university-based professional school of psychology. Since then, it has earned international recognition for its pre-eminence in psychology and related disciplines.

Derner developed out of the Department of Psychology's doctoral programs in clinical psychology and applied experimental psychology. In 1950, Adelphi began doctoral education in psychology and the following year formally organized the clinical psychology/school psychology program. In 1957, the American Psychological Association (APA) accredited the clinical psychology program citing that "it was 15 years ahead of its time and might serve as a forerunner for clinical psychology programs which emphasize a strong professional orientation."

The Department of Psychology has been continually accredited since 1957. In 1999, it received accreditation for an additional seven years, the maximum length granted by the APA.

In 1966, the Department of Psychology continued as part of the College of Arts and Sciences and was given responsibility for undergraduate psychology and the master's and doctoral programs in general experimental psychology. The Institute of Advanced Psychological Studies was given responsibility for doctoral programs in clinical/school psychology, applied experimental psychology, and for the postgraduate program in psychotherapy and psychoanalysis, which had been established in 1963.

The Institute functioned as a graduate department of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences until 1972, when it became an autonomous professional school of the University. Gordon F. Derner became its first dean. In 1984, it was renamed in his memory, and Dr. George Stricker, the assistant dean since its founding, was named dean. Dr. Stricker retired in 1992, and Dr. Robert Mendelsohn was appointed dean. Dr. Louis Primavera was named dean in 2001. In 1997, the Institute accepted its first class in a program leading to the Master of Arts in general psychology. In September 1998, the Department of Psychology became part of the Derner Institute as its undergraduate division, offering the Bachelor of Arts in psychology. This merger united the faculty and resources of a broad, methodologically-based curriculum with those of a respected professional school of clinical psychology.
